Scenario:
You: I’m thinking about installing a gas fireplace… here.
Person yielding sledge hammer: Easy peasy, here’s what we’re gonna do. Smash a hole in the ceiling right over there; it’s the original stucco so I’ll be able to go through it like butter. Run some vent straight up through the attic – you may want to move Grammy’s fine China because we’re coming through alright. Shoot that pipe out the roof and you’re good to go.
You: Easy peasy, huh?
Person yielding a sledge hammer: Easy peasy.
Don’t get me wrong, we love direct vent and natural vent fireplaces at European Home (we also love people yielding sledgehammers). However, the point I was trying to make above is installing vent pipe is not always a practical, or affordable, option for certain spaces or design options. In these instances, vent-free fireplaces are a great option.
Let’s start with a definition to get on the same page.
“Ventless (or vent-free) gas fireplaces are freestanding units with no flue, chimney, or vent that carries the exhaust outside. They are designed to burn very efficiently, resulting in complete combustion and maximum heat. Using indoor air for combustion, the byproducts are primarily small traces of carbon dioxide and water vapor.”

There is a time and place for vent-free and there is a time and a place for people yielding sledgehammers. We want you to be completely happy with your fireplace decision, so if you ever have any questions please feel free to reach out!
